What is the Ketogenic Diet

The Ketogenic Diet is a diet:

It is a dietary model that mimics the metabolic effects of fasting. During fasting, our body begins to use the reserves of glucose and glycogen, and then begins to break down the fat that is stored. This breakdown of fat leads to the production of certain compounds, called ketones(or oxonates) bodies.

With the ketogenic diet, the body is supplied with exogenous fats (i.e. from food) and carbohydrates are drastically reduced, as a result of which the body begins to use fatty acids as main source of energyand to the concentration of ketone bodies increases;

Ketogenic Diet and Epilepsy

The ketogenic diet is not a “fashion” diet, but a established medical therapy used in the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy,from the 1920s. About 20-30% of patients suffering from epilepsy do not respond to medication. For these patients, the ketogenic diet can be a safe and effective treatment, with the aim of:

  1. reducing seizures in terms of frequency and severity
  2. reducing or stopping medication
  3. improving cognitive function
  4. improving the quality of life

In addition, it is applied to patients suffering from Glut-1 glucose receptor deficiency and in some severe epileptic syndromes, such as West syndrome, Lennox-Gastaux syndrome and Dravet syndrome. At the Clinic “AGIOS LOUKAS” we monitor a number of patients with the above syndromes, with very encouraging results.

This diet should be used only under medical supervisionand with responsibility qualified dietitian.

In the center of application of the ketogenic diet in “AGIOS LUCAS” the following is to a greater extent the classic ketogenic diet, which is the strictest kind of ketogenic, with the highest percentage of fat and the lowest percentage of carbohydrates. In adolescents and adults, a variant of the classic ketogen is usually preferred, the”Modified Atkins Diet”, which allows a slightly higher amount of carbohydrates and proteins for better compliance.

Ketogenic Diet and Cancer

The ketogenic diet has aroused interest as a potential complementary treatment for certain forms of cancer, such as glioblastomas. Some studies have suggested that ketogenic diet can positively influence the development of glioblastomas, while other studies have shown that it can improve the effectiveness of anti-cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

The ketogenic diet should not be seen as a replacement for conventional treatments, but as a possible supplement or alternative option that should be discussed with the patient's doctor.

A number of patients with various forms of cancer have been helped in “AGIOS LUCAS”. Recently published in the international press a case of the Clinic with a severe form of metastatic lung cancer, which was treated - in addition to conventional treatment - with a ketogenic diet and currently has about 20 years of survival with a very good quality of life (Evangeliou AE, Spilioti MG, Vassilakou D, Goutsaridou F, Seyfried TN. Restricted Ketogenic Diet Therapy for Primary Lung Cancer With Metastasis to the Brain: A Case Report. 2022 Aug 2; 14 (8) :e27603).

Ketogenic Diet and Autism

The ketogenic diet has been used successfully, for many years, in the treatment of people suffering from autism and other psychiatric illnesses. In addition to the classic ketogenic diet, variations of the diet are also used, such as the modified Atkins diet, the low glycemic index diet, and the diet combined with branched-chain amino acids (BCAA). As said before, our results are very encouraging, they have been published in the international press and applied in all countries of the world.
