Given the special sensitivity of patients with cardiac problems, the Heart Center is formed by persons who have been specially trained in the treatment of these patients.

The Heart Center of the Clinic “AGIOS LOUKAS” is very active, already has experience in the hospitalization of several thousand patients and is one of the largest heart centers in Northern Greece.

In our Clinic, all developments in cardiological and cardiac surgery science and technology are closely monitored and the most innovative methods and techniques are applied to treat any type of heart disease requiring surgery.

Departments
Clinical Cardiology

Patients with heart diseases of all kinds (heart failure, coronary heart disease, myocardiopathy, etc.) are hospitalized in the Department of Clinical Cardiology.

Interventional Cardiology

In the Department of Interventional Cardiology, patients with predominantly coronary heart disease are hospitalized and are primarily subjected to coronary screening. In the presence of significant coronary stenosis, either angioplasty (“balloon”) or surgical intervention is applied, therefore the patient is taken to the Cardiosurgical department.

Cardiac Surgical

Patients who need surgical treatment of heart disease are referred to the Cardiac Surgery Department. To date, more than 20,000 patients have been operated on in the Cardiac Surgery Department and the whole range of heart diseases has been treated.

Modern surgical equipment

The Heart Surgery Centers of the Clinic are equipped with modern machines and staffed with experienced medical and nursing staff. The Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit is equipped with the best equipment for supporting and monitoring patients and operates on the basis of modern medical protocols of postoperative care.

24 hour task force

For some time now, it has been possible to mobilize a specialist team at any time of the 24 hours so that patients who have experienced acute myocardial infarction immediately (and before cardiac necrosis occurs) undergo coronary screening and angioplasty.
A prerequisite, of course, is the immediate attendance of the patient (before many hours have passed since the attack). In addition, the interventional cardiologists of the Clinic are engaged in the electrophysiological study of the heart, so that in case of problems they intervene by applying the well-known “ablation” method, in order to repair the associated damage.

Innovative practices

Great innovations of the Heart Center are:
• The performance of complex angioplasty (Rotablation — total occlusions).
• Performing high-risk angioplasty with mechanical heart support.
• Carrying out multiple transdermal aortic valve replacement operations in high-risk patients.
• Endoscopic cardiac surgery, which includes the majority of cases requiring cardiac surgery.

Continuous training

The Centre carries out extensive research with presentations, publications and announcements at major Greek and European conferences. On a regular basis, events, complex procedures (angioplasty, valve replacements or heart surgery) are organized and directly transmitted to major conferences in Greece and abroad.
The Center also trains cardiologists, not only from Greece, but also from many countries abroad, as it is a reference training center in techniques such as Rotablation, Total Obstruction and TAVI, as well as cardiac surgeons from all over Europe, who are trained at the Institute of Cardiac Surgery, in endoscopic cardiac surgery.
