A new era, that of robotic thoracic surgery, began at St. Luke's Hospital, where the first robotically assisted lobectomy with the Da Vinci X system was performed by the medical team of the thoracic surgeon, Mr. Michalis Klimatsidas, specialised in minimally invasive and robotic thoracic surgery. This is the first operation in Greece, Cyprus and the Balkans with this robotic surgery system, but also the first robotic thoracic surgery operation ever performed in Northern Greece by a Greek thoracic surgeon.

Nowadays, operations are actually performed through a keyhole, without dilating the sides of the chest, as were the usual techniques in the past. For this reason, we are now talking about surgery through a keyhole surgery, which enables us to operate patients even at the age of 86-87 years, if their physical condition allows it.
Endoscopic thoracic surgery is called Thoracoscopic surgery or VATS (Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery). In this technique, we use a camera and especially long endoscopic instruments, which open and close inside the chest, so that they can fit into the chest cavity from a small hole. We use a monitor to do the surgery with spectacular results in the patient's recovery. It is worth mentioning that, lately, remotely controlled arms are also used by the surgeon, which are located on the so-called robot, with the surgeon being in the same room and operating them from a console, resulting in much more "relaxing" for the surgeon surgeries and precision of movements.
