The Ophthalmology Department of our Hospital is one of the most advanced ophthalmology centres in Greece. The people of the department seek innovation in the field of diagnostic and therapeutic ophthalmology and focus on patients and their needs.
The Ophthalmology Department of St. Luke's Hospital deals with the entire range of eye and eyelid diseases.
The aim of the people of the department is to maintain or improve patients' vision, following individualised means and practices. Thus, we evaluate and treat the patients holistically, always with priority to their particular needs and desires.
The department treats diseases of infancy and childhood (e.g. myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, strabismus, lacrimal duct obstructions), as well as adult and elderly diseases (e.g. cataracts, glaucoma, presbyopia, diabetic retinopathy, detachment).
In the operating rooms of the Hospital, all kinds of operations are performed with modern ultrasound and LASER machines, such as:
• Cataract surgery with a small incision
• Glaucoma surgery
• Retinal detachment surgery
• Vitrectomy
Each operation is performed by a specialised ophthalmologist.
Our state-of-the-art equipment contributes both in the diagnostic and therapeutic field.
• Optical coherence tomography (OCT). For examination of the fundus, macula and optic nerve.
• Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A). Digital bloodless angiography.
• Fluoroangiography, fundus photography, autofluorescence
• OCT of anterior molecules. Cornea and iris.
• IOL Master Biometrics. Laser use for accuracy in the calculation of the intraocular lens in cataract surgery.
• ECHO Biometrics. Use of ultrasound.
• Corneal pachymetry. In glaucoma and other diseases.
• Ultrasounds (at 15 Mhz). For A-ultrasound, B-ultrasonography and combined A-B ultrasonography.
• Electronic Humphrey perimeter 745i with sophisticated software. For diagnosis and monitoring of glaucoma, diseases of the optic nerve, macula and the rest of the fundus. Also, for neurological, neurosurgical and endocrine diseases. Necessary for monitoring patients of rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus or other diseases, where long-term treatment with hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) is required.
Therapeutically, at an outpatient department level, the following are available:
• Argon Laser (532 nm). For retinal photocoagulation.
• YAG Laser. For iridotomy and capsulotomy.
• SLT Laser. For trabeculoplasty.
• Cataracts, glaucoma, retinal detachment
• Epiretinal membrane, macular hole, glass haemorrhage
• Complications of diabetic retinopathy or cataracts
• Diseases treated with corneal transplantation or with the use of an amniotic membrane
• Age-related macular degeneration or diabetic macular oedema
• Retina vein occlusions
• Wounds of eyeball, eyelids, orbit
• Strabismus
• Occlusion of the nasolacrimal apparatus (pores, sac), dacryocystitis
• Entropion and ectropion
• Blepharoptosis, blepharochalasis and eyelid deformities
• Stye, pterygium, thyroid eye disease
The department's phacoemulsification and vitrectomy machines are manufactured by the most reliable international firms. The same applies to intraocular lenses (IOL), simple or premium (multifocal for correcting presbyopia or correcting astigmatism).
