The department is an integral part of the Hospital, with years of experience and professional training and contributes to the diagnosis of complex and difficult cases. The department also offers the Artificial Kidney Unit (AKU) which, according to Mr. Gionanlis: "... it allows the better management of complex and complicated cases, enhancing the operational capability of the Hospital and the safety of patients and giving the attending physicians the freedom to use all means in the care of patients."
The department is staffed with renowned nephrologists with extensive experience in clinical nephrology. The nursing staff also consists an integral part of the department as it provides all the required care to patients.
In the Nephrology Department of St. Luke's Hospital, all diseases that affect the kidneys are hospitalised and treated either directly or indirectly (systemic diseases), such as:
• Acute renal failure
• Complications of chronic renal failure
• Diabetic nephropathy
• Blood pressure disorders
• Hereditary or congenital diseases, such as polycystic kidney disease
• Urinary tract infections
• Glomerulonephritis
• Systemic lupus erythematosus
• Vasculitis
• Blood diseases
In the Nephrology Department, kidney diseases are fully examined with all modern, non-invasive diagnostic means, with the assistance of the hospital's state-of-the-art laboratories. Directed diagnostic kidney biopsies are also performed, where necessary. Finally, all forms of arterial hypertension are examined and treated, especially those related to kidney function.
With the assistance of the new, modern Artificial Kidney Unit that operates in our Hospital, the following can be treated:
• All cases of renal failure
• Cases at the level of intensive care units with the application of continuous dialysis methods
• Difficult and complex diseases with the application of special therapeutic methods, such as plasmapheresis
Also, in collaboration with the vascular surgeons and interventional radiologists of the Hospital, the most specialised operations are performed, such as:
• Placement of temporary (subclavicular or jugular) haemodialysis catheters
• Correction of venous thrombosis
At the same time, all stages of preparation are performed in patients who are expected to undergo kidney transplant with continuous monitoring before and after the surgery.
"Everyone can see the effort made to create a beautiful, friendly and modern environment, with the ideal living conditions for patients undergoing dialysis.
I believe that it is a place capable of alleviating the stress of patients and facilitating their stay in the Unit, making it as pleasant as possible.
The equipment of the Unit consists of state-of-the-art artificial kidney machines, which have full operational capability to apply all dialysis methods. There is a dual water treatment system that ensures the production of "super-clean" water, which is essential for the proper and safe application of dialysis treatments, while it is obvious that special care has been taken to ensure absolutely all hygiene conditions, thus ensuring absolute safety in the hospitalisation of patients."
