Why choose us?

The Microbiology-Biopathology Laboratory of St. Luke's Hospital is a modern, well-equipped and adequately staffed laboratory, comparable to the needs of a Health Unit such as St. Luke's Hospital.

For any information or to make an appointment, you can contact the Secretariat of the Laboratory
+30 2310 390 514

The Laboratory is fully equipped with the state-of-the-art Analysers of the leading companies in the field, covering the entire laboratory diagnosis, while at the same time it serves the entire range of laboratory culture tests.

Modern equipment

Our laboratory equipment includes:
• super automatic haematological, immunological and biochemical analysers
• modern blood clotting analysers
• automatic systems for determining Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate
• reliable blood typing analysis and pretransfusion control system
• automatic urine analysis system
• reliable automatic system of dialysis, identification of microorganisms and antibiogram
• 3 different Molecular Control Systems (Real Time PCR) for the identification of microbes and viruses, as well as the detection of resistant strains, so that that the physician receives valid, reliable and safe results in the shortest possible time.

In the Biopathology Laboratory of St. Luke's Hospital, we make sure that our equipment is maintained in the best way and according to the manufacturers' program.

Scientific – Laboratory staff

The Laboratory is staffed by 4 Medical Microbiologists-Biopathologists, 2 Biologists and 20 medical laboratory technologists, all of them with extensive laboratory experience in the management of the most demanding cases.

Our employees are adequately trained both in the use of Analyser and in all new laboratory practices, while special emphasis is given to the personal care provided to each patient.

"In the Microbiology Laboratory of St. Luke's Hospital, we stand with respect to each patient individually and, with the help of the modern technological means at our disposal, we are able to face serious challenges, contributing to medical science."

The scientific staff of the Laboratory keeps up with modern diagnostic data, monitors international scientific trends and engraves, in collaboration with the Hospital Management, the objectives of the laboratory, with the ultimate goal of valid, direct and quick results in a very wide range of laboratory tests.

General Laboratory analyses

The range of diagnostic analyses conducted in the Laboratory covers the whole range of the needs of a Modern Nursing Unit and concerns:
• General blood test (hemodiagram)
• Complete biochemical testing
• Full immunological control
• Laboratory thyroid function testing
• Reproductive hormones
• Vitamins and trace elements
• Drug level control
• Tumour Marker control
• Bone marker control
• Heart function control
• Sepsis and rheumatology marker control
• Blood clotting control
• Automatic blood group analysis
• Full urinalysis

Molecular and Special Analyses

A wide range of molecular analyses is covered in very little time and with excellent reliability. The Laboratory conducts, by applying molecular analysis, the following medical examinations:
• Control of more than 15 pathogens (upper respiratory viruses and bacteria, in less than an hour, with multi-selective molecular analysis (Multiplex PCR)
• Control of more than 27 pathogens (viruses and bacteria) of the lower respiratory tract, in less than 1.5 hours, as well as resistance genes, with multi-selective molecular analysis (Multiplex PCR)
• Molecular influenza testing
• Molecular tuberculosis testing
• Molecular monitoring testing of treatment in Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia
• Molecular testing in antibiotic resistance genes
• Molecular testing of the new Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 in two ultra-automatic pcr systems with particularly high sensitivity and specificity and in minimal time
• Platelet activity testing with the automatic Multiplate system

Blood bank – Blood donation

The Laboratory fully serves the Hospital's Blood Bank which, in cooperation with the Blood Donation Department of "Ippokrateio" General Hospital of Thessaloniki, covers in the best possible way the needs for blood to the hospitalised patients of St. Luke's Hospital.

Biological material cultures

The Laboratory covers a very wide range of needs for biological material cultures, with high quality culture materials and automatic systems for the identification of microbes and antibiotics, in order to provide physician with immediate and clear information on the monitoring of infections.
It has a super-automatic system of Haemoculture and identification of microorganisms. In addition, it controls the sterility of surfaces and air in vital areas throughout the Hospital.

Quality control

In the laboratory, an integrated Internal Quality Control system is implemented, while, in order to ensure the quality of its results, the Laboratory successfully participates in international external quality control programs.
The Laboratory is certified according to the international quality standard ISO900:2015, while the procedures for accreditation according to the clinical standard ISO15189:2012 have begun.
It operates 24 hours a day to meet the needs of the Hospital's patients.
