What is cleft (CLP)

Cleft is a common malformation that people unfortunately often refer to as a cleft lip or cleft palate. Clefts are a category of cases of incomplete convergence of head tissues, about the 5th to 9th week of pregnancy.

Types and frequency of occurrence

The cleft lip and cleft palate are the incomplete convergence of the lip, jaw (or alveolar apophysis) and palate (soft and hard). The cleft can occur individually in one of the anatomical areas or in combination of all the above. It can also be unilateral or bilateral.

In our country it occurs in a ratio of 1:600-700 births. The development of medical technology makes it possible to diagnose the existence of clefts from the embryonic stage with ultrasound examination.

Causes

The causes are not yet clear and it is difficult to explain why a cleft occurs. We know that there are:

These factors contribute to the occurrence of cleft, but we do not know the exact causes. Heredity does not follow simple patterns. Hereditary features may be hidden and not appear in every generation. For the appearance of a cleft, hereditary factors must coincide with other factors. This is still difficult to fully understand.

Problems created in children with cleft

The problems that are created in children with cleft, immediately after their birth, are:

Waiting for a child with cleft

A new baby brings a lot of emotions, such as joy, pride, and sometimes fear. When the baby has a particular medical condition, there is an additional sense of uncertainty and insecurity, and many other similar feelings and questions, such as:

Complete cleft treatment at St. Luke's Hospital

In our Clinic we can treat children with clefts fully. There is responsibility, scientific training, as well as a series of medical steps that are strictly observed by all the doctors involved. This is the most important point for the best treatment, since for example the diagnosis starts from the prenatal examination and not after the birth of the child, to follow the appropriate medical specialty at the appropriate age.

Therefore, in summary, the following applies:

Are children with cleft able to have a normal life?

"Clefts are objectively a situation that needs to be treated from many medical aspects. The cooperation of various specialties gives the best possible result. This collaboration begins with prenatal testing with ultrasound and geneticist for information to parents. The rehabilitation of these children by today's standards is complete and their life is perfectly normal, since the cleft does not imply a syndrome. The only concern for these little patients, but also their parents, is that the treatment is done gradually, over time.
