To whom the department is addressed

The department is addressed to all patients who face chronic or acute problems of the digestive system, namely the following organs and systems:

• Upper gastrointestinal tract and attached glands (mouth, pharynx, oesophagus, stomach)
• Lower gastrointestinal tract and attached glands (small intestine, large intestine)
• Pancreas
• Liver
• Gallbladder

State-of-the-art equipment

Using modern technological equipment and having a long experience, both in Greece and abroad, the medical staff of the department is able to cover the entire spectrum of modern gastroenterology and hepatology, having the ability to apply all modern diagnostic and treatment methods.

Modern interdisciplinary approach

Particular attention is given to the care of complex and rare cases that are treated with an interdisciplinary approach and their handling is carried out in collaboration with doctors of various specialties (oncology, hepatology council, etc.), such as with general surgeons, oncologists and interventional radiologists.

Statistics

In the department, more than 1500 gastroscopies, 1400 colonoscopies (or together with upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopies) are performed each year, as well as 400 endoscopic ultrasounds and 200 ERCP.

• Enteroscopy of the small intestine (spiral enteroscopy). Thanks to a specialised state-of-the-are endoscope, the diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy of the entire small intestine is possible
• Endoscopic mucosectomy (EMR)
• Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
• Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography and biliary drainage (PTCD)
• Installation of plastic and metal stents of bile ducts
• Diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)
• Directed biopsies (FNA, FNB)
• Excision of peripancreatic necroses, walled off necrosis (WON) after complicated pancreatitis
• Internal cyst and abscess drainage (transgastric pancreatic cyst drainage)
• Endoscopic invasive throughout the digestive tract
• All endoscopic haemostatic practices are applied (TTS-Clips, OTS-Clips, APC, haemostatic powder, Hemospray)
• Oesophageal varicose vein ligation and infusion of histoacryl in gastric varicose veins
• Treatment of all digestive stenosis (balloon dilatation, dilation, placement of metal stents)
