The Center for Liver Diseases of the Clinic “AGIOS LUCAS” is a comprehensive care center that focuses on the management and treatment of liver diseases.

If you do not have a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, preventively you should do:

At 30-39: Cardiological examination, electrocardiogram & Ultrasound of the heart (every 3 years)

At 40-49:Cardiological examination, electrocardiogram, Ultrasound of the heart (every 2 years)

After 50 years:Cardiological examination, electrocardiogram, heart ultrasound & fatigue test every year.

*If you are over 30 years old with risk factors for cardiovascular diseases (smoking, hypertension, hereditary history of coronary heart disease, hyperlipidemia, obesity or diabetes mellitus), You will need to be checked every year.

What is the purpose of each examination you will undergo:

Ultrasound of the heart

Heart ultrasound is an imaging, non-invasive examination of the heart. In summary, with the use of ultrasonic mechanical waves we can see in real time the heart and its macroscopic characteristics, such as the dimensions of its structures (anatomy) and the functional performance of these (physiology).

These images can help us investigate a patient's symptoms, monitor response to treatment or even determine the most appropriate treatment

Electrocardiogram

Electrocardiogram (ECG) is a paraclinical examination that analyzes the electrical current produced by the heart. The examination is done with an appropriate device, which records on paper the electrical signal that the heart produces during its operation.

The examination is complementary to taking a history and clinical examination of the patient and is carried out as a routine. With the ECG, abnormalities of the heart can be diagnosed, such as arrhythmias, angina or myocardial infarction, myocarditis, pericarditis and others. It is also useful examination for regular monitoring of patients with heart disease, as well as for preventive screening of people who are going to participate in sports activities.

Clinical examination

Clinical Examination includes listening to the heart and lungs with cardiological headphones to identify belching and whispers, palpation of the chest for malformations that betray congenital heart diseases, examination of the limbs to identify problems in blood circulation, palpation of carotid arteries, etc. Height, weight and pulse are also checked. You will be asked for your individual and family history regarding the existence of congenital heart disease or sudden death in your close family environment.

Laboratory testing

For the following tests, it is necessary that you have not eaten or drunk anything in the previous ten to twelve hours, except water.

• Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, Triglycerides and total lipids:
The results of these tests make up the lipid profile of your body, which must be within normal limits, mainly so as not to risk atheromatosis, which can later contribute to the manifestation of cardiovascular diseases.

‍• Blood sugar:
A consistently high value in this test can ring the alarm bell for the presence of diabetes mellitus.
‍
‍• Potassium and Sodium:
These are two electrolytes that must be within normal limits. Otherwise, these electrolyte disturbances may be due to endocrinological or nutritional reasons, kidney function disorders, the use of drugs (mainly diuretics), blood pathologies, etc.

‍• Urea and Creatinine:
These two tests give information about the proper functioning of the kidneys.

‍• Uric acid:
It can be found elevated when there are certain specific diseases, e.g. gout.
‍
‍• General blood:
Hematocrit, white blood cells and platelets are elements of the blood that affect heart function or reveal diseases or are even affected by taking medications.
