Sleep Study Clinic

People who have insomnia are not happy with their sleep, it does not rejuvenate them, and during the day they experience fatigue, atony, drowsiness, difficulty concentrating, irritability, sadness, impaired functionality.

Sleep disorders are a common and distressing problem. It is estimated that 30% of the general population has insomnia and 10% have symptoms during the day.

The most common cause of the problem is breathing disorders during sleep (often manifested by snoring and pauses of breathing). They are common and are a significant problem because they can be associated with other potentially life-threatening conditions (cardiac arrhythmias, heart failure, hypertension, traffic accidents, impotence, etc.).

These disorders are found in a very reliable way with special studies of breathing during night sleep, ranging from simple recording oximetry to multiparametric sleep study with or without electroencephalographic control. All these tests are done at the Pulmonology Laboratory of the Clinic “AGIOS LOUKAS”

Why choose us?
Comprehensive care

The Clinic operates a certified Sleep Laboratory for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. The scientific director of the Sleep Laboratory is the doctor-pulmonologist Vasilis Michailidis, who has received the certification from the European Sleep Society (ESRS) in the specialty on sleep disorders (Expert Somnologist).

Specialized Equipment

The Sleep Laboratory is a specially equipped room, which ensures normal sleep conditions, in an environment similar to that of the house, has sound protection and a constant temperature. Special equipment is easy to use, has a minimum weight and does not cause any burden on the subject.

Holistic Treatment

We listen to patients with caution knowing how complex the problem of insomnia is and how much it affects their daily lives.

Next to the Patient

Depending on the severity and classification of the problem, we can recommend therapeutic solutions, ranging from mild conservative measures, to more invasive practices, such as the application of positive pressure devices for more serious cases.

Patient Impressions

“My adventure with apnea syndrome begins a long time ago. I had signs of fatigue during the day. As the years passed, the problem became more and more intense and at the same time dangerous because I felt sleepy even when driving. Speaking with the outstanding pulmonologist of the Clinic “Saint Luke”, Mr. Michaelides, and after I underwent a sleep study, which showed that I had 80 apneas per hour, Mr. Michaelides suggested that I sleep with a CPAP device. The results were excellent. Literally my life has changed. Now I sleep very well, I don't feel the fatigue I used to feel and of course most of all I don't get sleepy while driving.”

Patients treated in our clinic

Patient 57 years old, with a history of arterial hypertension, hyperlipidemia and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. In the last 4 years he has experienced recurrent episodes of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, despite medication followed by a cardiologist. The patient is overweight and reports having “poor sleep”. He was referred for a polysomatic sleep study, which revealed that he suffers from severe Sleep Apnea Syndrome. Immediately began treatment with a CPAP respirator in sleep, with which the apneas were treated and showed a significant improvement in heart rate. The patient wears the CPAP device in his sleep, with significant improvement in heart function and no new episodes of atrial fibrillation.

Note: Obstructive sleep apnea is a risk factor for cardiac arrhythmias. Patients with sleep apnea have a 2-4 times higher risk of experiencing atrial fibrillation and an increased risk for recurrent episodes of atrial fibrillation after ablation. CPAP therapy improves the control of atrial fibrillation by limiting symptoms and leads to a better outcome of interventions such as cardioconversion and ablation.

Georgios Grammatikos

Specialist Hepatologist, Gastroenterologist

A 44-year-old professional driver, a smoker and overweight, came in for a sleep study. He reports waking up tired, with morning headache, severe dry mouth, daytime fatigue and drowsiness. In the last year, with weight gain, she wakes up in the evening 2-3 times to go to the toilet and has a decreased libido. He often tries to stay awake during the day, and twice “fell asleep at the wheel” while driving during work hours and almost caused an accident. The sleep study revealed a serious problem of apnea, for which CPAP therapy and a weight loss and smoking cessation program were initiated at the same time. The patient is now active and energetic throughout the day, with a refreshing sleep and without the risk of causing a traffic accident.

Note: patients with obstructive apnea have a much higher risk of causing a car accident compared to healthy people

Middle-aged woman brought her husband to the sleep clinic, reporting that he snores very strongly and often stops his breathing in sleep, causing her intense anxiety. The husband, with hypertension, diabetes mellitus and coronary heart disease, does not perceive the symptoms, however, he does not enjoy his sleep, and in the morning he always feels dry mouth, nasal congestion and a feeling of secretions in the throat. The sleep study revealed a moderate God-dependent problem of sleep apnoea. ENT screening for upper respiratory problems, sleeping on the side and applying a CPAP device to improve sleep of both “2” was recommended!!!

Note: Obstructive apnea is an important risk factor for cardiovascular complications, strokes and metabolic disorders
