Center for Liver Diseases

Our Philosophy

We are fully aware that the patient is not a “biological machine” that has experienced damage, but a person with feelings, with fears, with expectations, with dreams, with family.

The Center for Liver Diseases of the Clinic “AGIOS LUCAS” is a comprehensive care center that focuses on the management and treatment of liver diseases.

The Center is staffed by specialized doctors of Hepatology, Hepatosurgery, Hepato-Oncology and Interventional Radiology with the scientific responsible being Georgios Grammatikos, Senior Lecturer. Professor at the University of Frankfurt. The specialization of doctors both in Greece and in specialized centers abroad provides the clinical and scientific experience required and can address the entire spectrum of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Hepatology and Hepatosurgery with the most up-to-date international medical guidelines.

Our Center is also aimed at patients who are looking for a in-depth multidisciplinary second opinion in order to proceed to the most valid therapeutic option.

-CATEGORIES-
Diseases that we face
Viral hepatitis (A, B, C, D, E)

Viral hepatitis is a liver inflammation with an increase in transaminases (liver enzymes) due to hepatitis A, B, C, D or E viruses. Viral hepatitis can cause acute or chronic inflammation of the liver. People with viral hepatitis may in the future be led to cirrhosis of the liver, liver failure or liver cancer, if they do not treat the disease in a timely and responsible manner. For the treatment of viral hepatitis, we have effective antiviral treatments available, which, with proper handling, can either inactivate the hepatitis B virus or eradicate the hepatitis C virus with very high success rates.

Metabolic hepatitis (NAFLD, NASH)

Metabolic hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and alcoholic liver disease, are liver inflammations due to metabolic causes, and a person's habits also play a big role. People with a long history of alcohol consumption may develop liver lesions that require early treatment. The same applies to patients who fit into the profile of metabolic syndrome, with central obesity and fatty infiltration in the liver. For the treatment of metabolic hepatitis, we have effective diagnostic and therapeutic approaches that improve the patient's quality of life.

Hereditary hepatitis (hemochromatosis, Wilson's disease, α1-antitrypsin deficiency)

Hereditary hepatitis are genetic disorders that cause liver inflammation. Wilson's disease, hemochromatosis and α1-antitrypsin deficiency are characteristic, which require immediate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. In our Center we have a high level of expertise in the treatment of hereditary hepatitis, significantly improving the patient's quality of life.

Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH, overlap/overlap syndromes)

Autoimmune hepatitis is liver inflammation that occurs when a person's immune system turns against liver cells. The exact cause of autoimmune hepatitis is not known, but genetic and environmental factors seem to interact over time in terms of triggering the disease. Immediate diagnostic and pharmacological intervention in autoimmune hepatitis is crucial since up to 30% of patients with autoimmune hepatitis can develop advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis of the liver with liver failure in a short time

Cholestatic reactions (jaundice, cholelithiasis, PBC, PSC, IgG4-cholangitis)

The term cholestatic reaction denotes the set of morphological changes observed in cholestasis. This reaction involves a wide range of architectural changes of the liver and varies depending on the cause and duration (acute or chronic) of the cholestatic process. Analogous to the investigation necessary in the rise of liver enzymes, acute or chronic elevation of cholestatic enzymes requires immediate hepatological investigation. Treatment of cholestatic reactions depends on the cause of these reactions and can be conservative or invasive.

Cirrhosis of the liver (acute chronic liver failure)

Liver fibrosis/cirrhosis is a chronic liver damage with a change in the architecture of the liver and in some cases concomitant liver failure with complications in patients with cirrhosis (ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, portal hypertension with esophageal varicose veins, hepatonephritis or liver pathopulmonary syndrome). Both fibrosis and cirrhosis of the liver need constant hepatological monitoring, both for the prevention and treatment of liver complications, and for the early diagnosis and treatment of hepatocellular cancer (ECC).

Liver cancer (primary and secondary/metastatic)

The Center for Liver Diseases serves the diagnostic separation of intrahepatic formations (both benign and malignant), but also the required immediate conservative or invasive (surgical) treatment in all cases of liver diseases or foci. A special category is liver malignancies, whether they are primary, such as hepatocellular cancer and cholangiocarcinoma, or secondary metastases. We now know very well that, under certain conditions, even liver metastases can be treated correctly with a therapeutic approach, leading a percentage of them even to complete healing. Upon completion of the diagnosis at the therapeutic level, both the staging of the liver disease through biopsy (either of liver tissue or directed in the case of liver foci), and the surgical - mostly laparoscopic - resection of liver tumors and metastases, constitute the main and direct offer of the Institute of Hepatology signals to the affected patient.

Liver diseases of pregnancy

During pregnancy, an alteration of liver enzymes (rise of transaminases during pregnancy) is often observed, which always requires hepatological investigation. Both benign gestational cholestasis and transaminasemia due to hyperemesis in pregnancy, which are common causes of elevated transaminases, but also rarer diseases, such as preeclampsia, and HELLP syndrome, require hepatological consideration and treatment.

Infectious liver cysts (abscesses, echinococcal cysts)

Liver cysts are generally asymptomatic and are usually found randomly on routine imaging tests. They can sometimes be associated with serious complications, such as infection, bleeding, rupture or compression of the biliary tree. An infectious liver cyst (IHC) is a liver cyst complicated with secondary infection and is generally considered rare. Treating an infectious liver cyst usually combines pharmaceutical and surgical methods.
