Center for Sarcomas and Musculoskeletal Tumors

Musculoskeletal tumors are tumors that occur and grow in the bones and soft molecules that surround them, namely muscles, tendons, ligaments, fat, vessels, and nerves. These tumors occur on the limbs, arms and legs, on the abdominal wall, on the back and in the pelvis. Such tumors can be benign or malignant (sarcomas).

 More frequent such tumors are:
lipoma, liposarcoma, osteosarcoma, giant cell tumor, aneurysmal cyst, osteoid osteoma, fibroma, Ewing sarcoma, engchondroma, chondrosarcoma, synovial sarcoma, fibroma, chordoma, exome osteoblastosis, osteoblastoma and several others.

Diagnosis

Required, specialized in such tumors, diagnostic team moderated by specialized orthopedic sarcoma surgeon.

Imaging control includes digital x-rays, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Performing computed tomography (CT) and bone scintigraphy to stage the tumor. The diagnosis is completed with a biopsy of the affected area. The biopsy is usually performed with a needle guided by a CT scan or by ultrasound. “Open” (incision) biopsies are not recommended. Hopes for easier diagnosis are left by the new technique of “liquid biopsy” and based on DNA mutations.
