Epilepsy Center

At the Clinic “AGIOS LOUKAS” there is an Epilepsy Program and a Special Crisis Recording Unit, which offer services to people with epilepsy and other similar problems.

The Clinic's Epilepsy Center Program meets the requirements of a modern quadrennial Epileptology Program. Its capabilities stand out in Greece, but also in the wider Balkan region, setting the bar high when it comes to the care of patients with epilepsy.

We make about 100 - 110 incident estimates per year, of which 35% in children. In all assessments, 75% are diagnostic and 25% preoperative.

From the preoperative estimates, approximately 10-12 surgeries per yearThis is a high number, taking into account the frequency of the disease and the number of patients requiring surgical treatment.

- What is it about -
The Epilepsy Center is aimed at:
Patients who we are not sure suffer from epilepsy, while experiencing similar “seizures” (fainting attacks, stressful situations, movement disorders, etc.).
Patients suffering from epilepsy, however, do not know what type of disease is from, which is necessary for the proper treatment of their problem.
Patients who experience the so-called “pharmaco-resistant forms of epilepsy”,that is, those whose seizures are not adequately controlled by standard treatments.

Why choose us?
High specialization

The Epilepsy Unit has been operating continuously since 2002, having at its disposal more than 1800 diagnostic and preoperative assessments and more than 170 epilepsy surgeries, in adults and children, with results commensurate with the established epilepsy centers in the developed world, statistics that are unique to the Greek space.

Modern Methods

Our practice also includes highly sophisticated methods of investigation, such as long-term video-EEG studies with implanted Intracranial Electrodes and stimulation of the cerebral cortex with electrical stimuli, for the most complex and demanding surgeries.

Innovative Practices

Our surgical experience with the input of experienced surgeon Dr. Vasiliou Zoudsa, includes in addition to the usual operations for epilepsy (Temporal Lovectomy, Epileptogenic Lesion Excretion, Topectomy) and particularly rare and complex operations (hemispherotomy, mesolabial cross-section, multilingual resections) in adults and children, with excellent results (A total of 85% of our operated patients so far have achieved excellent postoperative control of their crises).

Reference Center

Our statistics, logistical infrastructure and manpower are in line with the conditions deemed necessary and the guidelines proposed by the International Association Against Epilepsy (ILAE) for the operation of quadratic Epilepsy Centres.

Is there a cure?

In the vast majority, epilepsy patients are controlled from excellent to very satisfactory with antiepileptic drugs.

Some forms of epilepsy, especially childhood, are self-limiting, last for only a few years, usually until puberty, and then they subside and we can even discontinue antiepileptics.

Other forms last longer and there is a need to take the treatment indefinitely, even for life. And yet these forms, for the most part, are well controlled.

For the small percentage of patients whose seizure control is not satisfactory with medication, there are options for non-pharmacological countermeasures, such as surgical treatment, ketogenic diet and implantation of a Pulmonary Nerve Stimulator.

FAQs
1. When should I visit the Epilepsy Center?

As soon as possible — in our clinic there is an opportunity to investigate and treat such cases 24 hours a day. You do not have to know for sure whether the symptom you are experiencing is epileptic, or not — that is the job of your doctors, after checking. In any case, if something “strange” happens to you that resembles the symptoms described, without panicking, seek help and accompaniment from someone so that you can quickly and safely reach medical help. Avoid driving or traveling alone.

2. How to prepare for the appointment with the doctor:

The appointment is determined after direct telephone or online communication of the person concerned with the project manager Mr. Garganis, which is in the form of a short interview, for a summary of the history and determination of the objectives of the assessment. More specific instructions for the assessment procedure are given by the sick person both during the preliminary interview and during the assessment. At the end of the assessment, its results are presented to the patient and the relevant instructions are given to him. Full information note and examination in electronic form, he receives approximately 15-20 days after. Also, both before and after the assessment, it is useful to communicate with the therapist/referring neurologist, in order to further clarify the objectives of the assessment, as well as to be informed of its results and the relevant recommendations and instructions.

3. What tests are done at the Epilepsy Center?

The extent and type of examination, to which each patient undergoes, is individualized according to the type of problem. The most basic examinations are the following:

•Long Video-Electroencephalographic Recordings
•Long Intracranial Video-Electroencephalographic Recordings
•Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain
•Neuropsychological Tests
•Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) of movement and speech
•EEG and Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (EEG-fMRI)

4. What types of surgeries are performed at the Epilepsy Center?

There are three main types of surgery to treat epilepsy.

•Temporal lobe surgery
•Surgery outside the temporal lobe
•Lesinectomy

The type of surgery depends on the type of seizures and their initial focus. The goal is to remove the entire area of brain tissue that causes seizures, without causing loss of brain function.
