Check up Osteoporosis

Globally, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over the age of 50 will present an osteoporotic fracture.

From the age of 35, the normal loss of bone mass begins, as more bone is absorbed than is created.

The sharp menopausal drop in estrogen levels makes women particularly vulnerable, while a variety of other factors appear to dynamically affect bone reconstruction processes.

For many decades, osteoporosis was considered a “disease of menopause.” Now, thanks to early prevention, we know that more and more young women are facing the disease, such as in the context of an early menopause or treatment with antiestrogens due to breast cancer.

At AGIOS LUCAS we specialise in the treatment of osteoporosis. Depending on the case, we help patients manage the disease and enjoy an active lifestyle.

Osteoporosis examination is performed in the Clinic. The diagnosis of bone density measurement is made, with the help of measuring the absorption of double-energy X-rays. The diagnosis is completed by measuring biochemical and hormonal parameters of bone metabolism in the blood and/or urine.

03

Based on the results of the tests, we proceed to the treatment options.
Osteoporosis treatment starts from preventive neutralization of risk factors and appropriate physical exercise and balanced nutrition, to targeted medication.
Today we have a wide variety of drugs that work either by inhibiting bone resorption, reducing the rate of bone loss, or by increasing the formation of new bone.

Our people:

“Our goal is to promote bone health, reduce the risk of fractures, accelerate healing and prevent new fractures. Although there is no cure for osteoporosis, there are steps that can prevent, slow down, or stop its progression.

In some cases, bone density can even be improved to some extent. So, depending on the case, we help patients manage the disease and enjoy an active lifestyle.”

Patients treated in our clinic

A 61-year-old patient with osteoporosis and consecutive vertebral fractures under antiabsorbent treatment for 3 years comes to the Osteoporosis Clinic “AGIOS LOUKAS” for further investigation.

Laboratory testing showed increased calcium values in blood serum and urine, as well as increased values of parathormone. The ultrasound of the cervix and soft tissues that followed showed an adenoma of the parathyroid glands in loco typico, which was successfully treated surgically by the endocrine gland surgeon of the Apostolos Goropoulos Clinic.

Parathyroid hormone returned immediately to normal levels and a high-dose calcium and vitamin D substitution treatment was recommended to the patient. The bone density values showed immediate improvement and the previous fractures were stabilized with rapid clinical improvement of the patient.

A 52-year-old patient with advanced osteoporosis comes to the Osteoporosis Clinic “AGIOS LOUKAS” for further investigation. In her history, an early menopause at the age of 39 years is indicated, as well as an autoimmune thyroiditis of the lymphocytic type (Hashimoto). The subsequent laboratory test showed signs of intestinal malabsorption with low calcium in the urine
and severe vitamin D deficiency; At the same time, specific antibodies were found positive for an autoimmune enteropathy with gluten intolerance and intestinal malabsorption, celiac disease, which was confirmed by gastroscopy and taking 12-finger biopsies.

The patient was informed about the disease, as well as the absolute indication for abstinence from gluten and a high-dose calcium and vitamin D substitution regimen
was recommended to the patient. The bone density values showed immediate improvement and the clinical picture of the patient improved rapidly.
